Stories as a Catalyst for Change featuring Narrative 4

On Monday, April 11, 2022, the Global Initiatives Department hosted its first in person GIP event since before the COVID-19 pandemic began. This spectacular event was titled "Stories as a Catalyst for Change featuring Narrative 4" and was led by Global Scholar Martin L. and juniors Chole L. and Willa J.

Narrative 4 is a global organization driven by artists, shaped by educators and led by students. During the event, Narrative 4 shared the importance of empathy, which drives the organization's work. A few reasons they mentioned were empathy builds social connection through trust, allows us to respond appropriately to others, fosters more productive dialogue, and more.

As the event title suggests, the GIP event featured three Narrative 4 representatives. The first, Maru Castañeda, is Narrative 4's Mexico Regional Manager. The next, Taelor Lewis, is Narrative 4's Midwest Regional Manager. Last, Babalwa Tetyana is a Narrative 4 Student Ambassador representing South Africa.

One of the questions that Willa J., who led the Q&A section of the event, asked the panelists to share the most rewarding part of working with Narrative 4. Tetyana shared, "The most rewarding part for me is the person that Narrative 4 has helped me become, the amazing leader that I would say I am today." In a world where leadership opportunities are becoming increasingly difficult to secure, it was inspiring to hear Tetyana talk about her leadership through Narrative 4, which she shared has helped her become a better person.

I was especially touched when Tetyana shared one of her poems called "I am from." Her reading emanated passion and was both written and read brilliantly. I am so glad I got to hear Tetyana's reading.

I was greatly impacted by the panelists' sharing of their experiences with Narrative 4 not only because the event was conducted in person but because each panelist was clearly passionate about their work with Narrative 4 and the organization in general as well. As someone who has always been timid to share my story, it is inspiring to hear people like Castañeda, Lewis, and Tetyana and Reddick encourage me and the rest of the audience to make our voices heard in a world where it is becoming increasingly difficult to do so.
