Olivia Rodrigo Visits the White House

On May 21, 2021, American singer-songwriter and actress, Olivia Rodrigo, released her debut studio album, Sour. Rodrigo's album, which consists of 11 songs, blew listeners away. Sour broke the record for having the biggest opening week for an album by a female artist in global Spotify history. "The album also launches with the second-largest streaming week ever for a non-R&B/hip-hop album, and second-biggest for an album of any genre by a female artist according to Billboard."

However, Olivia Rodrigo has become a role model to teenagers worldwide for reasons beyond her engagement in the entertainment and music industries. Rodrigo is an institute speaker and panelist for the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, a non-profit centered around advocating for equal representation of women in media. She was also the face of the She Can STEM campaign, a platform that encourages all girls, non-binary youth, and trans youth to stay interested and consider careers within STEM.

Most recently, at just 18 years old, Olivia Rodrigo traveled to the White House in Washington D.C. to advocate for the young to get vaccinated during a White House news briefing on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. The White House administration hoped to convince more unvaccinated people to get vaccinated by inviting Rodrigo to the White House, as she has an extremely large fan base, mainly comprised of teenagers, eager to follow her life.

"Young people under the age of 27 are vaccinated at a lower rate than older people, according to the White House, and they were part of the reason the administration said it fell short of Mr. Biden's goal of partly vaccinated 70 percent of adults by July 4," wrote Katie Rogers in a New York Times article titled "At the White House, Olivia Rodrigo Says Vaccines Are 'Good 4 U.'"

According to Our World in Data, about 159 million people in America have been fully vaccinated, and about 334 million doses have been given.

  1. Aleena, very good to hear about Olivia Rodrigo's successes with SOAR and her work with girls in STEM; I now have a better understanding of why the Biden Admin looked to partner with her. Do you have any idea how, over the past three weeks, the youth of America have responded to her plea to get vaccinated. Is her campaign largely via social media (I have not seen any of her promo work on tv or computer pop up ads- tho my algorithms probably are different from 22 year olds:-)
