Fires, Forests, and Flash Floods: Climate Change in Turkey

One of the most dangerous effects of climate change is Earth's rapidly increasing temperature; consequently, dry and hot air often results in forest fires. Forest fires remain one of the more devastating and, unfortunately, common consequences of climate change.

In 2021, several regions such as Australia, California, and Siberia had fires that lasted for months. Southern Turkey also had a number of fires in late July. Turkey, however, responded well to the crisis by quickly mitigating the threat. According to an article in the Daily Sabah titled "Fires, floods, mucilage: What's happening in Turkey?", the OGM, Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), National Medical Rescue Team (UMKE), and the Turkish Red Crescent were vital in Turkey's response.

More recently, Northern Turkey has been experiencing a series of flash floods, endangering the lives of many. In fact, as of Monday, August 16, 2021, 58 people have lost their lives. According to a CNN article by Gul Tuysuz, "The country's Natural Disasters and Emergency Directorate (AFAD) said in a statement that 48 people died in the Kastamonu province, nine people died in Sinop and one person died in Bartin."

Further, according to an article in New York Times published on Sunday, August 15, 2021, more than 70 people are missing in Turkey amidst the outbreak of flash floods.

Climate change is a pressing issue that the world needs to address immediately to prevent future natural disasters and other consequences of climate change and save lives.

  1. Aleena, rarely do we hear about raging forest fires elsewhere in the world- partially because our western States are afflicted by climate issues that have provoked record breaking fires. When we do hear about foreign fires, they are HUGE! As you point out, Australia and, most recently, Turkey have been scorched by out of control fires. Your blog lists several agencies as the key to keeping these fires from beginning too big. What specifically did these ABC agencies do/create/implement as policies/practices to curtail fires? The blog also suddenly talks about flash floods; 3 sentences on FFs. In fact the hole blog is very short (9 sentences- most of which are stats strung together). Finally, the second half of the short blog contains content that is not visible (unless I highlight the sentences). Great topic- run with it.
